Introduction to CEP Middle School


华外中学(国家课程方向),以国家课程为主体,融合先进国际教育理念,在高效完成国家课程的同时,开设名著阅读、英语泛读、英语视听说、国际理解、外教艺术、第二外语(德日韩法西)、科学探究、心理健康、男子足篮球(全体学生足篮球)、人工智能、软笔书法、中华传统文化等必修特色课程,另开设50多门个性化选修课程,学生自选分类走班学习。

HW Middle School is based on the national curricula mainly, and draws on advanced international educational concepts. While completing the national curricula efficiently, it offers compulsory courses, including literary classics reading,extensive English reading, English reading, listening & speaking,international understanding, foreign arts, second foreign language (German,Japanese, Korean,French or Spanish), science inquiry, psychological health, football and basketball, AI, soft brush calligraphy, traditional Chinese culture and soon. Additionally, over 50 personalized elective courses are available for students to choose and learn.


中学部每班30人左右。双向出口,学生参加中考,出口以国内升学为主。同样可以参加国际考,报读国际高中也具有较强的优势。

Each class has about 30 students, and offers two graduation options. Students may attend the entrance examination to be enrolledin domestic senior high schools, which is chosen mostly, or international examinations to apply for international senior high schools, which is also of great advantages.

华外中学的课程实施中外融合的1+x课程模式, “1”为学校必修课程,“x”为满足不同发展的类型学生发展的需求的选修课程。

Middle School adopts an integrated curriculum model “1+x”, in which “1” stands for the national compulsory curriculum, and “x” the elective courses that meet diversified development needs of students.

必修课程设置:基础课程、拓展课程、探究课程

Compulsory curriculum: basic courses, extended courses and inquiry courses


学校的必修课程由国家九年义务教育课程及特色必修课程组成,包括“语言与文化”“科学与数学”“体艺与健康”“科技与实践”“人文与社会”五个模块,共14门基础课程,12门拓展课程,6大主题探究课程。基础课程严格按照国家课程标准和要求设置课程和完成教学目标,着眼于促进学生基础学力与基本素养的高水平发展。而拓展课程和探究课程则是以学科知识体系为主线,以综合实践创新能力培养为目标,激励学生自主学习、主动探究和实践体验,是对基础课程的有力补充,拓宽了课程的广度和深度。

Our compulsory curriculum consists of the national curriculum for nine compulsory years of education and featured compulsory courses, falling into the five modules – “Language and Literature”, “Science and Mathematics”, “PE,Arts and Health”, “Technology and Practice”, and “Humanities and Social Sciences”, including 14 basic courses, 12 extended courses and 6 PBL inquiry courses.The basic courses are set and taught in strict conformity with the national curriculum standard and requirements with a view to promoting the high-level development of the basic academic competence and literacy of students. The extended and inquiry courses aim to develop comprehensive practice and innovative abilities with the disciplinary knowledge as the thread, and motivate students to conduct self-directed learning, inquiry and practice. The extended and inquiry courses are effective extra-nutrition to the basic courses, and extend the breadth and depth of the curriculum.



◆外语类:九年一贯多维外语课程体系


Foreign languages:nine-year multi-dimensional foreign language curriculum


五维度课程体系(基础课程、拓展课程、EMI学科课程、个性化选修课程、第二外语)构成浸润式语言学习环境,14个课程开放满足学生个性化选课和发展要求。中外教师的合作教学,融合中西方教育理念和方法的优点,发展学生外语语言能力、思维品质、文化意识和学习能力,特别是发展学生外语视、听、说、读写技能,形成外语交流能力,全面培养学生英语学科核心素养,为其将来进一步学习深造,成长为具有中国情怀、国际视野、较强 跨文化交际能力的国际人才打下良好的外语基础。

The five-dimensional curriculum system (basic courses, extended courses, EMI courses, personalized elective courses, and second foreign language) forms an immersive language learning environment, with 14 courses to meet students’ personalized learning and development needs. Collaborative teaching by Chinese and foreign teachers combines advantages of Chinese and Western educational concepts and methods to develop students’ foreign language proficiency, ways of thinking,cultural awareness and learning ability, especially their foreign language listening speaking and reading skills. This will enable them to communicate proficiently inforeign languages, thus laying a good language foundation for their further studies to become international talents with Chinese sentiments, global perspectives and cross-cultural communication skills.



◆主题探究课


PBL inquiry courses


主题探究课,是以科技、人文、环保为主题的综合性跨学科学习课程。我们融合先进教学理念,设计适合儿童(年)的探究主题,配合社会实践、博物馆参观、户外探究等方式,锻炼学生处理信息、独立思考、小组合作和自信展示等多方面能力。
The PBL inquiry courses are interdisciplinary courses with themes on science and technology, humanities and environmental protection. By drawing on advanced teaching concepts, we have designed inquiry themes suitable for students combined with social practice, museum visit and outdoor inquiry to develop students’ multi-faceted abilities,including information processing, independent thinking, teamwork and presentation.

个性选修课程则包括“学科知识”“体育竞技”“艺术培养”“科技创新”“素质拓展”五类。满足学生不同方向与不同层次的发展需要,充分激发每一位学生的兴趣爱好和优势特长。

Personalized elective courses include five categories -- “subject knowledge”, “sports”, “arts”, “technological innovation” and “literacy development”, which are designed to meet students’ development needs of different directions and levels, and fully stimulate all student’s interests and strengths.

◆小班化教学:每班约30人,配置班主任一名、配班老师一名、生活导师,充分利用师生比高的优势,导师和学生之间形成相对固定的对应关系,把握学生心理和学习动态,鼓励和引导学生健康成长。切实地做到对每一个学生负责,让每一个学生在自己的学科基础与自身潜能上得到最大化的提升与发挥。

Small-class teaching: Each class has about 30 students, a homeroom teacher, an assistant homeroom teacher and a dorm teacher. By making full use of a high teacher-student ratio,relatively stable relationships are formed between teachers and students, so that teachers can learn students’ mental and learning condition, and encourage and guide students to grow healthily. In this way, we are truly responsible for every student, and let every student to maximize and tap their learning and own potential.


◆分层分类个性化培养:专属定制、因材施教,个性化培养;根据学生学科基础分层教学,针对学生不同基础和特质 进行个性化教学和辅导。在分层分类个性化教学的模式下,学生学会如何正确评价自己,正确估计自己的能力,并逐渐找到将来发展的方向。

Differentiated and classified personalized development: With the intention to customize personalized development for students with different talents and abilities, we conduct differentiated personalized teaching and tutoring based on students’ different learning levels and characteristics. Under such mode, students know how to evaluate them selves and their abilities properly, and find future development directions gradually.

培养学生良好的思想道德品质,养成良好的生活和学习习惯,身心健康,思维敏捷,开拓创新,学会自理,学会生存。实现德育与社会管理、自律与他律相互补充、相互促进。

The intention is to foster good moral quality, and good living and learning habits for students to ensure that they are physically and mentally healthy, creative, and good at taking care of themselves.


// 坚毅品质培养

Fortitude development


每学期的坚毅品质课程,注重探究体验教育,体育训练竞赛、军事实践、定向越野、野外生存、极限挑战等户外活动让学生不断地打磨自己,淬炼意志和坚毅品质。

Each semester we have special courses focused on exploratory and experiential education. It aims at improving students’ will power and fortitude through outdoor activities like athletic training and competition, military practice,orienteering, wildness survival and extreme challenge.



// 利他精神培养

Altruism development


社区志愿服务的文化激励学生参加校内和校外服务活动,通过学校每期提供的丰富校内服务活动,以及学生自发组织的多样化活动,培养学生的服务与关爱理念,利他精神、以及对多样化环境的适应能力和责任与担当的品质。CEP中学部志愿者不仅为校内图书馆、开放日服务,还积极加入社区服务活动。有220名同学加入了志愿者组织,志愿者系统累计服务时长为2162小时。

Our culture of community volunteer services inspires students to take part in internal and external service activities, including those provided by the school in each semester and those organized by students themselves, in order to develop their sense of service and awareness of care, altruism, resilience to diverse environments, and sense of responsibility. Our volunteers not only serve at our internal library and open days, but also take an active part in community services. 220 students have joined volunteer organizations, and our volunteers have offered services for 2,162 hours in total so far.

Theme events


学校制定德育教育主题月,发动学生参与大型活动的组织,如由学生组织升旗仪式、英语戏剧表演、演讲比赛、探究周和世界课堂分享等。在学生合作能力得到普遍锻炼的同时,也发现培养了一批有较高组织、管理能力的学生。

We have set monthly moral education theme, and mobilize students to be a part of organizing major events,such as flag raising ceremonies, English drama shows, speech contests, inquiry week and world classroom sharing.Our students’ teamwork has generally improved, and a number of students with strong organizational and management skills have been developed.

学校教师队伍由三部分组成:国内教学经验丰富的优秀教师、外籍教师及海外留学归国教师。中方教师具备较高的双语教学能力及信息化教学素养,能积极主动地促进自身专业化发展;外籍教师全部持有国际教师资格证书,并经广州市外专局审定可在国内任教、能使用母语进行教学的优秀教师,均为本科及以上学历,平均教龄10年以上。外籍教师专业度、跨学科能力强。正式在岗专任教师62人,100%专业对口;100%教资。


华外中学部教师团队平均年龄35岁,中高级职称占比78%,博士2%,研究生学历35%,海归教师及外籍教师占比15%。


每个班级配有班主任、配班老师及生活导师。中学部师生比为1:8。

Our teaching staff is composed of experienced excellent domestic teachers, foreign teachers and teachers who have returned from overseas study. Our local teachers have strong bilingual and IT-based teaching skills, and pursue professional development actively; our foreign teachers all have international teaching certificates with a bachelor’s or above degree, and have got teaching certificates.Our foreign teachers have an average of over 10 years teaching experience, and strong professional and interdisciplinary skills. We have 62 full-time foreign teachers,all of whom are professionally competent and qualified.
The average age of our teachers is 35. 78% of them hold an intermediate or senior professional title,2% have a doctor’s degree, 35% are post graduates, and 15% are overseas-returned teachers and foreign teachers.
Each class has a homeroom teacher, an assistant homeroom teacher and a dorm teacher. Our teacher-studentratio is 1:8.

以IE启发潜能作为价值导向,将学校的1+X课程(基础课程、拓展课程、探究课程+选修课程)均列入学期评估范围,对学生进行多元评价,除考查学生的知识和能力状况外,还依据学校的育人目标,开展对思维能力、文化知识、学习方法、举止言行等方面的评价。
Based on the invitation education (IE) theory, our 1+X curriculum (basic, extended courses, inquiry + elective courses) is included in the semester evaluation scope where in students will receive multiple evaluation. In addition to subject knowledge and abilities, we will also evaluate students from the aspects of thinking, cultural knowledge, learning methods, behavior, etc. based on our education goals.

Star of HW recognizes students excelling in academic performance, overall quality, special talents or independent living skills.
 
We use formative evaluation system, and students will gain scores gradually based on analysis of evaluation results. They have opportunities to win awards including Weekly Star, Monthly Star, Star of the Semester, Scholarship of the Year and the Xiang Qin Award with an attempt to fully explore our students’ full potential.

博雅综合奖学金通过对学生“素质与方法”“学业表现”“多元能力”三方面的综合考量而产生。其中“素质与方法”占15%,包括学生自评、同学互评、学科老师评价、生活导师评价;“学业表现”占70%,以本学年两次期末考试的成绩为依据;“多元能力”占15%,包括“语言能力”“学科拓展能力”“体艺才华”“探究投入”“社区服务”“领袖才能”。

The Bo Ya Scholarship isconferred based on a comprehensive assessment of a student’s “qualities and approaches”,“academic performance” and “all-round abilities”, in which “qualities and approaches”accounts for 15%, including student self-assessment, assessment by classmates, assessment by subject teachers and assessment by the resident mentor; “academic performance” accounts for 70% based on the results of the two final examinations in the current school year; “all-round abilities” accounts for 15%, including “language proficiency”, “extended subject skills”, “sports and arts skills”, “inquiry skills”, “community services”, and “leadership skills”.
